I feel it would be a pity if I didn't describe the way we get around here. It is a very strange thing, but we haven't missed our car at all. Transportation is so efficient here that you hardly think about actually being the one doing the driving in this madness. We love our M72 bus that picks us up from the back of our building and drops us off in front of it. This bus takes us across town to the east side- we like this option for going to church, then we just make a switch on 3rd Ave and take another bus right to the corner of 87th- perfect! We have been known to take the M66 and then catch the subway- but we really prefer this route. That trip generally takes about 30 minutes, and there is plenty to see on the way. We have doubled the time it would take for us to get to church in Missouri, but it is twice as much fun as well. Sometimes we will walk home, which is a nice 2 1/2 mile jont, down 5th Ave by the Metropolitan Museum, through Central Park and our neighborhood- it is quite lovely (best for the kids if we have snacks-otherwise you might decipher a down turning on the mouth region of their faces).
We regularly take the M5 from 72nd to 5th Ave and do various amounts of walking along there. It is really fun to map our adventures online to see how far we have walked each day. I wish I had logged it since our arrival- it would be interesting to see how far we have walked. We have a pedometer to track our travels as well; such fun!
It is very seldom that we take a taxi, but if you need to get somewhere in a hurry- they are a must. It could really add up to take the taxi everywhere; it costs us about $12 to get to the church, when you are cheap like we are, it is a last resort! The kids love taking a taxi, because you can watch TV and follow our route on the GPS.

Time to go use some of our transportation options for our outing today, which is the Cloisters!

Sounds cool. I how efficient it is to get around in NYC. (unless, as you mentioned, you're the one driving...) Cool pictures too!
How can you fit everyone in a taxi? We had trouble trying to fit 5. Even the van taxi told us he was breaking the law to "squeeze in" a fifth person. Do you have to have two taxis if the entire family is going somewhere?
We have never taken the whole family in the same taxi- we would have to take a limo! From the airport we took 2 taxis, and the other times we have always been split up into groups. Joe with a couple of the kids, me with a couple of kids going the same place at different times or something to that effect!
